Bio-robotics Liquid handling
System
The Leiden Genome Technology Center has a Caliper Automated Liquid Handling Sciclone (ALH) 3000 system. It has three pipetting systems:
  1. a 96-well high volume pipetting head using tips (up to 200µl)
  2. a 96-well low volume pipetting head using tips (1-25µl)
  3. 8 needles
It includes a 96-well PCR machine (Biometra) and a spectrophotometer (Molecular Devices SpectraMax Plus384) for UV reading of 96- and 384- well plates.

See the Caliper website for more information on the Caliper Sciclone ALH 3000.
See the Molecular Devices website for more information on the MDC spectrophotometer.

For quick and easy pipetting projects (2-200µl) of only a few 96- or 384-well plates we have the Rainin Liquidator 96 free to use for anyone. We only ask users to place a direct order for the used tips. First time users: ask the LGTC how to use it and see general equipment for more information.

Liquid Handling at the LGTC
Projects
When you have a project for the Caliper Sciclone ALH 3000 it is necessary to discuss it with the LGTC. We can help you discuss and evaluate the possibilities, costs, planning, and all other issues.

Quotation
Once it has been decided how to start you will need a quotation from the LGTC. This quotation can be requested via the LGTC order system for which you will need a valid account. A quotation for Caliper Sciclone ALH 3000 pipetting jobs contains the following products: use of the Caliper Sciclone ALH 3000 (with or without the PCR machine and spectrophotometer), consumables (plates, seals, and low or high volume tips etc...). For each project we include the time needed to program, test, and start up of the robot by a LGTC technician. To accept the costs you need to deliver a printed and signed version of the quotation to the LGTC. Only then, the project will start. Without a signed quotation we will not start the project.

Planning and time span
Once we have received the signed quotation we will discuss the planning with you. Depending on the complexity and the "size" of the project it can be ready within 6 weeks. When unexpected circumstances occur that delays the planning, you will be notified.

Summary: what can you expect from us? General rules
  • You need to discuss your project beforehand and have a valid quotation. The costs may be more expensive than expected due to more consumables, plates, seals, and tips needed for the final project. We will discuss the extra costs with you and add them to the quotation.
  • We will keep the protocol for later pipetting jobs of the same kind. When the protocol is changed we will consider it as a new project and charge for the hours needed for programming, testing, and starting up of the robot.
  • All discounts, special wishes, planning, complaints, problems, etc... have to be discussed with and agreed by the lab-manager or they will not be considered valid.
